AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein) is a tumor marker primarily used to help diagnose and monitor certain types of cancer, particularly liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), as well as germ cell tumors (such as those found in the testes or ovaries). It is a protein that is typically produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus, but AFP levels in adults are usually very low.
